Artist Statement
I am not an artist. Why do I say that in my artist statement? Because if I can be an artist, then you can be an artist. All you have to do is look for beauty in your own backyard. True, living in Del Mar, CA helps. But with using an eye for beauty, you too can find beautiful shapes, angles and colors that are all around you. Everyone can find a sunset or a glint of the sun coming through a drop of water falling from a rusty hose. Look with an eye for the beauty that is all around. You have the camera already. All my pictures were taken with my cellphone. The pictures that cellphones take today are so clear and colorful that you too can make art with what you have in your pocket and what you have within your unique perspective on the world. Enjoy my art and use it as an inspiration to show us your own.
Artist Autobiography
To demonstrate to you how much I am not an artist, let me tell you about a beginning art class I took as a personal challenge. The first day, the teacher held up my art in front of the whole class and literally said, “Here is what you do not want to do.” Many years later I tried again with a wine and draw evening social thing. The teacher had helpers who came by and gave tips. My helper took what I thought was a cool drawing and proceeded to completely rework and repaint my entire creation in order to “help me.” After all that, it is pretty amazing that I can now be writing an artist biography. I can truly say that I am proud and amazed at how my art has turned out. My background is in the mental health field and I have helped counsel people with their life problems. I have also run several related businesses. For instance, 1-800-therapist lead to an "Entrepreneur of the Year" award. I have also run a business for over 20 years helping people find treatment for eating disorders. So, as you can see, there is no training in my background to be an artist. My point is that you have an important and unique perspective. Share it with the world as I have.
