Business and Investing Accomplishments:

ENTERPRISE AWARD: Biography of Dr. Kevin Grold  this is the application which earned me the winner of Entrepreneur Magazine's Business of the Year Award

Kevin Grold received his Ph.D. in Psychology and was about to pursue his life-long goal of becoming a practicing psychologist.  Unfortunately the climate for therapists in the US changed and Managed Care took over the mental health field.  Dr. Grold realized that as a newcomer, he had no chance to participate in a system that was now filled with desperate and highly competitive seasoned professionals.  He had to take a huge risk and give up all involvement with his chosen profession--or so he thought.  Amazingly, he had the foresight to realize that there were many therapists across the country in his same position.  Expecting to now be at the top of his earning potential, instead Kevin Grold found himself with accumulating school debts.  He realized that there was a market potential for a new nationwide business, but he had no funds with which to build such an organization.  That is where Dr. Grold's creativity kicked in and allowed him to persevere until he had built what AT&T eventually referred to as "the largest multidisciplinary therapist referral service in the US"--all from his own living room, without any large expenses or overhead.  Utilizing new telephone technology, Dr. Grold was able to sign up one therapist as a "Network Director" (who paid him a membership fee) in each area code across the country.  These therapists subsequently created their own local referral network as a part of Dr. Grold's nationwide operation.

One of the greatest challenges for Dr. Grold was creating a nationwide structure which was run entirely by himself from his home, while making it as effective as a large organization.  This was accomplished with the help of some fancy computer software, which allowed Dr. Grold to organize a huge amount of administrative, financial and technical information into a structure that could be handled efficiently. Dr. Grold was also able to single handedly write, direct, and produce a successful, professional television commercial with a major movie star (Marina Sirtis from Star Trek: The Next Generation). The 1-800-THERAPIST NETWORK caught the attention of Entrepreneur Magazine--who gave him a "Business of the Year" award (and is doing an unprecedented second story on him this summer).  Even the US Congress gave him a recognition award for the enormous amount of community service that he is able to provide to callers all across the US.

This type of community service had never been available before and it caught the attention of such prominent organizations as the Red Cross, the United Way, and even Abigail Van Buren (Dear Abby)-- who began to use the Network on a regular basis for consultation.  In fact, Ms.Van Buren took such notice of Kevin Grold that she decided to recommend some of his helpful mental health brochures in two of her nationwide columns.

When Dr. Grold isn't spending his time expanding the 1-800-THERAPIST NETWORK, his other endeavors have also proven to be quite successful.  His professional work has been documented in the California Psychologist, the National Psychologist, and the Psychiatric Times.  He has been quoted all around the world, from Headline News to the London Times, from People magazine to a three-page feature in Dividends magazine. Dr. Grold has also found time to work as a consultant to the entertainment industry and as a Staff Writer for Self-Help Psychology Magazine.  His research has been devoted to understanding lasting, loving relationships--his book, The Love Report, is based on that research.  In addition, he has created a number of well-known relationship and psychological tools which are in use in universities, doctor's offices, government agencies and mental health centers across the country.

Dr. Grold took a risk with some of the income derived from the extremely successful 1-800-THERAPIST NETWORK, and started his own home-based publishing business--Life Publications.  His first three self-improvement publishing projects have been financial successes and this business will turn a profit every year since its inception.

In all, it was Dr. Grold's flexibility, creativity, and willingness to risk his prepared, chosen life path that allowed him to have the tremendous successes that have befallen him.

Psychological Work Experience:

I first began counseling thirteen years ago on a teen hot-line.  This program involved extensive training in Rogerian counseling skills and crisis intervention.  During my sophomore year in college I was selected to be a counselor at Goleta Valley Junior High, where I furthered my training in one-to-one counseling, and was allowed to lead a "males only" therapy group.  During my junior year in college I worked with learning disabled students at Mountain View Grammar School.  Here I was supervised in group counseling, individual counseling, psychological testing, and evaluation of fourth through sixth-grade students.  I have also worked with adolescents in a drug rehabilitation home where I gained an understanding of the workings of a residential treatment center.  I was also employed as a Psychiatric Aide at the Woodview-Calabasas Hospital.  There I gained experience working with severely emotionally disturbed adolescents and adults.  I also gained further experience in crisis intervention, individual and group counseling, and drug rehabilitation.  I then worked at the Community Resource Center in Encinitas where I familiarized myself with the social service aspects of community assistance and did individual counseling.  I was next employed at Palomar College Student Health Services where I gained extensive experience in individual and group counseling with college students.  I have also been employed as a mental health worker at San Luis Rey Psychiatric Hospital where I have furthered my experience working with severely emotionally disturbed adolescents.  I have also worked at the Worker's Evaluation Center in San Diego doing psychological testing and group therapy..
